According to Loren Cordain, the founder of the Paleolithic Diet, there can be several causes of cancer. In his book, The Paleo Diet Revised: Lose Weight and Get Healthy by Eating the Foods You Were Designed to Eat, he states the following:
“Cancer is a complex process involving many genetic and environmental factors. It is almost certain that no single dietary element is responsible for all cancers. However, with the low-glycemic Paleo Diet, which is also high in lean protein and health-promoting fruits and vegetables, your risk of developing many types of cancer may be very much reduced.”
According to the Paleo diet, several dietary factors can increase one’s risk of cancer, such as:
1- Consuming foods with a high glycemic index: consuming foods with a high glycemic index (GI/GL) can cause chronic high blood glucose levels, which can produce elevated levels of insulin.
In turn, high levels of insulin increase the levels of the hormone Bioactive Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) which promotes cancer development by inhibiting cell death or apoptosis and stimulating cell proliferation.
Foods with a high glycemic index also affect the levels of another hormone involved in insulin metabolism. This hormone, insulin-like growth factor binding protein three (IGFBP-3), decreases the body’s sensitivity to natural signals that restrict cellular growth.
High insulin levels decrease levels of IGFBP-3, which may promote cell growth. Processed foods, refined carbs, sugar, soft drinks, sweeteners are all examples of high glycemic foods that increase the risk of developing cancer.
2- Consuming large amounts of carbohydrates: Glucose is the body’s main energy source, and all cells, including cancerous ones, use it to grow.
When a person eats carbohydrates, they are metabolized and converted into glucose, which provides the necessary nutrients to support the body and keep it functioning properly.
Cancer cells need about 200 times more glucose than normal cells to develop and multiply. Therefore, a high-carb diet promotes the growth of cancer cells because carbohydrates contain a lot of glucose.
