Most health experts agree that folic acid is beneficial to treat or manage kidney disease, however some would still require more research to ensure this relation and better understand the relative mechanism. Nevertheless, special consideration needs to be taken for patients with diabetic nephropathy which is the kidney damage causes by diabetes.
Accordingly, Dr. Matt Lyon, MD, Emergency Medicine suggests that “folic acid reduces the progression of chronic kidney disease but only when there was enough vitamin B12 in the body”.
Nevertheless, doctors remain concerned about folic acid’s effect on diabetic patients with kidney disease. Dr. David Spence, MD, suggests that “high dose of B vitamins made the kidney function decline faster”.
