What science says about Folic Acid / Vitamin B9 For Cancer

Folic acid supplementation for the reduction of cancer has always been a controversial topic among scientists.

According to the supporters of this theory, folic acid may block initiation and early promotion of specific types of cancer. For instance, Dr. James Meschino, Doctor of Chiropractic, MS, RHOP, suggests that the combination of vitamin B12 and B9 (folate) are beneficial in reducing cancer risk. He recommends to always keep those vitamins at an optimal level in the body.

Meanwhile, other scientists disagree with this claim and suggest instead that folic acid may promote the progression of established precancerous and cancer cells. According to them, consumption of high levels of folic acid aids cancerous cells to grow faster and more easily.

For instance, Dr. Jean-Pierre Issa, M.D, along with other researchers elucidate that high folic acid supplementation leads to high levels of DNA methylation which might increase the risk of certain types of cancer such as prostate cancer.

Research showed that folic acid (vitamin B9) should be consumed in its moderate amount (400mcg) and not more. Increase or decrease in dosage should always be consulted by doctors as the amount and timing of exposure to folate might affect the body in a positive or negative way.
