Folic acid plays an important role in the DNA synthesis and cells repair in the body. It is also an important factor that helps the formation of red blood cells. Without folic acid, the body will not have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen efficiently to the cells, which causes fatigue.
This deficiency in red blood cells is commonly known as anemia. In this specific case, folic acid can play a key role in overcoming fatigue and boosting energy by improving red blood cells production.
Dr. Werbach suggests that folic acid might have an effect on reducing chronic fatigue syndrome. He proposes that if folate supplementation has an effect on chronic fatigue, then possible high doses should be given for a long period of time. However, testing was only done in a small study and for a short period of time, hence this evidence is not conclusive.
