Obesity is generally caused by overeating and moving too little. If people consume high amounts of food but do not burn off the energy through exercise and physical activity, much of the surplus energy will be stored by the body as fat.
According to the blood type diet, which was created by naturopathic physician Peter D’Adamo in 1996, your blood type determines your risk factor for diseases like obesity.
Three risk factors determine whether or not a person can become obese:
1- High cortisol levels: cortisol is a stress hormone. It is the body’s main alarm system that helps it handle stress and restore its balance. It plays an important role in several body functions, including metabolism as it manages how the body uses fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Cortisol also helps regulate blood pressure and controls the sleep cycle.
When under constant stress, the body increases cortisol production. This can cause the cells to become insulin resistant which can lead to higher blood sugar levels and weight gain.
Cortisol prompts the production of another hormone, leptin, that is involved in fat regulation, metabolism, and appetite control. High levels of cortisol in the blood increase the amount of leptin released by fat cells, which in turn increases the production of cortisol. This turns into a vicious cycle and causes weight gain.
Some blood types naturally have more cortisol in their blood than other blood types. As a result, they might have higher levels of leptin in their blood. Thus, they would be more predisposed to weight gain.
2- Inability to break down specific foods: some blood types cannot break down certain food groups easily, which affects their ability to metabolize or process food. If food is not metabolized and digested properly, the body will store it as fat, which can lead to obesity over time.
For instance, some blood types have lower levels of a stomach enzyme called Intestinal Alkaline Phosphatase (IAP). As a result, they cannot break down fats easily. Thus, they would be more predisposed to weight gain.
Other blood types are more predisposed to develop “Metabolic Syndrome” because they cannot break down fats. “Metabolic Syndrome” is a cluster of symptoms that include high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, high triglyceride levels, high blood sugar, and excess fat around the waist. It increases an individual’s risk of obesity.
3- Inability to digest incompatible lectins: some blood types cannot digest specific foods because they contain harmful lectins that are incompatible with their blood type antigens. These lectins cause blood to coagulate around the food, triggering an immune response. This diverts energy away from digestion.
Lectins also bind to the mucosal lining of the gut, causing the blood to coagulate in the digestive tract. This slows down digestion and blocks the gut from absorbing nutrients properly. The body stores undigested food as fat, and if digestive problems persist, this can lead to weight gain.
Each blood type should avoid specific lectins to prevent digestive problems. An individual’s reaction to lectins present in different foods varies depending on whether or not he or she secretes their blood type antigens into their bodily fluids like their urine or saliva.
Individuals who secrete antigens are called secretors, while those who do not are called non-secretors. Secretors’ bodies have stronger negative responses to lectins than non-secretors, so they have to be even more careful about what they eat.
