Cancer is a medical condition in which abnormal cells start dividing and growing out of control in the body.
It occurs when old cells in the body do not die but instead grow to become unstoppable and form new abnormal cells. These new cells may form a mass of tissue called a tumor.
The process of cell division is necessary for growth, reproduction, and cellular repair in the human body. However, when the process is not properly regulated by the proteins that allow the cells to progress through the various cycles of cell division, cancerous tumors may form.
According to the blood type diet devised by naturopath Peter D’Adamo in 1996, certain blood types are more likely to develop cancer based on genetic factors relating to blood type.
D’Adamo mentions four factors that can cause cancer in specific blood types.
1- A weak immune system: individuals of all blood types are at risk for cancer if the person has a weak immune system that will not detect and kill cancer cells.
2- The inability to destroy cancer cells: some blood types do not destroy cancer cells easily. Tumor antigens called Thomsen-Friedenreich antigens (T or Tn antigens) appear in cancerous cells. They are structurally similar to blood type A antigens because they both end in the same sugar, n-acetylgalactosamine.
This makes it very difficult for the immune system of people with blood types A and AB to detect and destroy these malignant cells because it might mistake them for type A antigens.
On the other hand, the immune system in Type O and type B individuals can quickly identify T or Tn antigens and destroy them before the cancer cells multiply.
3- Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF): specific blood types like type A and AB cancer cell growth because they do not destroy cells with Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), which is a protein that stimulates cell division.
Instead, the antigens bind to cancer cells carrying EGF receptors and activate EGF. When type A antigens bind to EGF receptors, they cause cancer cells to multiply rapidly.
Blood type O and B individuals can also have cells with EGF. However, they can identify them and fight the spread of cancer cells.
4- Blood clotting factors: specific blood types like blood type A and AB individuals are more at risk of developing cancer because they have more “blood-clotting factors” in the blood compared to other blood types.
Cancer cells can bind to the clotting factors and circulate freely in the blood, spreading everywhere in the body. Type O individuals do not have blood clotting factors, so cancer cannot spread easily in the body.
Type O individuals are least at risk for most cancers because they do not have any antigens on their red blood cells. So, EGF cannot bind to type O red blood cells as easily as other blood types. However, due to their blood type, Type O’s are most at risk for skin cancers.

The blood type diet is suggested to treat and prevent cancer because it helps boost the immune system and fight malignant cells by providing each blood type with the proper foods to do so.
In addition, people with specific blood types need to avoid certain foods with harmful lectins that may cause an unnecessary immune response, weakening the body’s immune system.

In addition, people with specific blood types need to avoid certain foods with harmful lectins that may cause an unnecessary immune response, weakening the body’s immune system.
The blood type diet advises people of each blood type to eat foods with beneficial lectins that help fight cancer cells. These lectins clump around cancer cells, allowing the immune system to identify and destroy them.
The lectins help blood types that cannot identify T or Tn antigens target and kill cancerous cells. Some lectins in specific foods also prevent the growth and spread of cancer cells by deactivating the EGF receptors in cancer cells.
In 2007, a study examining the use of lectins in cancer treatment titled “Lectins as Bioactive Plant Proteins: A Potential in Cancer Treatment” found that some lectins have anti-cancer properties and can be used to kill cancer cells. This study partly supports Peter D’Adamo’s hypothesis about beneficial lectins targeting and destroying cancer cells.
However, it does not examine if specific blood types react differently to different lectins in foods. Thus, it does not fully validate the main hypothesis of the blood type diet.
The blood type diet also addresses the issue of increased blood clotting factors that help cancer cells circulate throughout the body in type A and AB individuals.
It prescribes suitable foods that do not contain harmful lectins to each blood type. The foods prevent the blood from clotting and slow the spread of cancer cells in the body.
The blood type diet works by prescribing specific foods for each blood type to boost the body’s immune system. Some foods contain beneficial lectins that can fight cancer cells. The blood type diet works by prescribing specific foods for each blood type to boost the body’s immune system. Some foods contain beneficial lectins that can fight cancer cells. These lectins are suggested to clump around and bind to the cancer cells, allowing the immune system to target them and kill them.
For instance, blood types A and AB should consume beneficial lectins found in peanuts and ancient grains, such as amaranth, because they help the immune system fight cancer cells. All blood types should consume more fruits and vegetables to fight cancer because they contain fiber and protect the digestive system.
Plus, individuals should avoid consuming foods with harmful lectins for each blood type to prevent an unnecessary immune response. If people avoid these foods, their bodies will have a more robust immune system and more energy to track and fight cancer cells.
Furthermore, people of specific blood types should avoid foods that stimulate the production of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) because it promotes cancer cell growth. For instance, blood types A and AB should avoid consuming wheat products and fatty foods because they stimulate the production of EGF and the growth of cancer cells.
In addition, blood type A and AB individuals have more clotting factors in their blood than blood type O and B. Blood clotting factors like Factor VIII and fibrinogen help cancer cells spread throughout the body more easily. Both fibrinogen and Factor VIII are proteins that allow cancer cells to attach to platelets and blood vessels and circulate throughout the body.
Accordingly, this food regimen restricts different kinds of foods with harmful lectins that cause blood to clot for each blood type. The absence of clotting factors decreases platelet levels in the blood vessels. As a result, cancer cells will no longer bind to the platelets nor stick to blood vessel walls that serve as an entry point to other tissues in the body.

- Blood Type B: can eat green leafy vegetables, eggs, most meats (except chicken and pork), and low-fat dairy. They should avoid wheat, corn, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds.
- Blood Type AB: can eat seafood, tofu, dairy, beans, and grains. They should avoid kidney beans, corn, beef, and chicken.

- Take certain supplements depending on your blood type: the diet restricts the consumption of meat and dairy for specific blood types. This may result in malnutrition, so some blood types must take nutritional supplements to ensure that they get the vitamins and minerals their body needs.
o Blood type O individuals need to take Vitamin C, B12, iron, and folic acid supplements.
o Blood type A individuals need to take Vitamin B, K, calcium, and licorice supplements.
o Blood type B individuals need to take magnesium, ginkgo, licorice, and lecithin supplements.
o Blood type AB individuals need to take Vitamin C, B12, and iron supplements.
- Exercise: the diet recommends different kinds of exercise based on your blood type.
The different types of exercise for each blood type are listed below:
o Blood type O: People who are type O should engage in intense exercising activities like jogging or biking.
o Blood type A: People who are type A should focus on low-level activity and stress-relieving exercises like yoga or tai chi.
o Blood type B: People who are type B should focus on moderate-level exercise and can include yoga or other mindfulness practices.
o Blood type AB: People with type AB blood can combine exercises from blood types A and B.
All of the blood types should avoid:
- Processed meats: this is because processed meats contain high levels of saturated fat. They also contain sodium nitrite. Sodium nitrite can react with chemicals in the stomach and cause cancer.
- Foods that are high in sugar: high sugar foods can cause oxidative DNA damage and mutations that cause cancer. Sugary foods increase the risks of pancreatic, gastric, colorectal, and prostate cancer.
