Today we're going to talk about the immune benefits of vitamin C. Vitamin C does a lot of different things for your health, but it's immune benefits are really amazing.

Vitamin C deficiencies are actually a very common problem. You can have what's called a subclinical vitamin C deficiency, where you're not completely deficient, but you're deficient enough to have a weakened immune system. Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient. This means that unless you're constantly getting vitamin C, you could become deficient very quickly.

Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant. Free-radicals can damage certain things in the body. Vitamin C can help counter free-radical damage.

Immune benefits of vitamin C:

1. Enhanced antibodies
2. Increased neutrophil motility
3. Enhanced B-cells (increases antibodies)
4. Enhanced T-cells (helps fight pathogens)
5. Increased interferon (kills infected cells)

A vitamin C deficiency can make you more susceptible to certain infections. If you're very deficient in vitamin C, you can develop scurvy. Scurvy can increase susceptibility to fatal infections like pneumonia. Scurvy is often followed by infectious epidemics because infections increase the need for vitamin C. If you're using your immune system more, you can deplete your vitamin C reserves.

Causes of a vitamin C deficiency:

1. Not getting enough vitamin C from the diet
2. An infection that puts stress on the immune system

How much vitamin C do you need?

• You need at least 200mg of vitamin C per day.

Foods high in vitamin C are:

• Sauerkraut
• Leafy greens
• Bell peppers
• Hot peppers

If you're going to take vitamin C supplements, make sure that you take a whole-food-based complex vitamin C supplement, not a synthetic vitamin C supplement.
