Ulcerative colitis is the ulcer formation in the large intestine and it is the result of long standing inflammation of the colons. The symptoms of this condition is that there will be anorectal bleeding, pain in the abdomen and altered bowel movements either diarrhea or constipation, it affects in the age of 20 to 50 genetic is found to play an important role it runs in families, there is also an autoimmune type of Ulcerative colitis. It can also be a result of long standing mental disorder or stress, insomnia or anxiety disorders. The management of Ulcerative colitis can be done through Ayurveda in the initial stages. It is related to rakta pitta , grahani or raktadhisara, where the symptoms are of the similar types, to control these conditions, the basically we need to concentrate on our diet, lifestyle and on the medicinal part of it. Diet plays an important part of Ulcerative colitis. It is a result of a long standing inflammation of the bowel. We need to avoid all kind of food that creates irritation or inflammation within the gut, spicy food, combination food, non vegetarian food, alcohol and smoking is a complete no when it comes to treatments of Ulcerative colitis. Eating food in a hurry or eating food when really not hungry can lead to these conditions. Taking medications to clear bowel in a long term can result in creating lot of irritation or ulceration in the gut. Avoid all dairy food products and go in for bland food. The management should start in the initial signs and symptoms itself. Treatment is we need to modify your diet, lifestyle and then w e need to look into management with medications too. When it comes to diet, avoid sour or spicy food, even if it is a vegetarian good, abstain from leaving long gaps in between your meals and take adequate rest because sleep helps in healing body tissue. Smoking and alcohol is a total no in treating this. in dairy products we have seen only ghee and butter milk is suitable, the rest of the dairy products have to be avoided. Well cooked vegetables have to be given. Avoid raw vegetables in cases of Ulcerative colitis. Chew your food thoroughly before you can swallow it. Semi digested food helps in clearing the gut. When lifestyle changes are done and incorporation of yoga and meditation. There is a holistic approach to cure this. In Ayurveda this is clinically correlated as rakta pitta , grahani or raktadhisara. Here the dosha is “pitta”. All medications that can pacify the pitta dosha has to be given like medicated ghee, changeryadi ghritam. Indukanta ghritam is advised in Ulcerative colitis. Chornams like dadimashtaka choornam, musta moola choornam, dilva choornam is all given for Ulcerative colitis. Pills like vilwadi pills, chiruvilwadi kashayam, drakshadi kashayam, kaitaryadi kashayam.. All these are found useful in treating Ulcerative colitis. There are treatments like vasti, the piccha vasti, dumra kashaya vasti is proved very effective in treating Ulcerative colitis.
