There are various reasons for developing eye weakness that are basically because of our lifestyle, using computers, working in dim light, nutritional deficiencies or certain hereditary issues. There are various herbs in ayurveda to improve the eye sight and fight various eye disorders. Fresh amla juice which is a rich source of vitamin C helps to improve the eye sight. Triphala is a combination of three fruits, Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki. This can be given as choornams administered internally with ghee or honey or it can be given in the form of ghee which is called as Mahatriphalaghritam. Triphala is also used in kashayams in the form of eye wash and regular usage of eye drops also. Eshtimadhu, Bhringaraja i.e. Eclipta alba fortified with coconut oil can be made to apply on the head as well as on the sole of the foot. This helps to sound sleep and relaxed eye muscles. Ghee instead of oil is advised for improved eye sight. This can be given as medicated ghee or cow’s ghee also. Nutritional deficiency can be corrected with various nutritional food on our daily basis that can include carrots, beetroots, green leafy vegetables, mangoes, almonds can also be advised. Various treatments have been mentioned for improving eye sight like netra tharpana i.e. retaining the medicated ghee by building a fort around the eyes. This is retained for a stipulated period of time under the supervision of doctors. Then there are netra aschothana. There are external therapies where herbs are placed on the eyes. Various exercises for the eyes have to be done and this helps in strengthening eye muscles and improving circulation towards the eye. With all these methods certain conditions of the eye like cataract, glaucoma and progressive myopia can be prevented.
