Liver Disease Dos and Don'ts: Tips and Prevention

What you should Do for Liver Disease

Maintain a healthy weight by following a good diet and doing proper physical exercise

Maintain a healthy weight

Keeping a healthy weight is very important for liver disease. Try to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to avoid getting overweight. Doing regular physical exercise also helps burn fat and maintain a healthy weight.

Safe sex: using condoms to prevent liver disease and hepatitis.

Practice safe sex

Hepatitis B and C are commonly transmitted during sexual activity through blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and other body fluids, especially if there are small cuts or abrasions. These increase the risks of infection as they allow the virus to directly enter into the bloodstream.

That's why it is important to practice safe sex and use condoms during intercourse. This helps reduce liquid exchange and reduces the skin to skin contact.

What you should Avoid for Liver Disease

Avoid alcohol consumption: man rejecting alcohol and showing sign of having enough alcohol

Avoid alcohol

Excessive alcohol drinking can be damaging to the liver and leads to alcoholic liver disease.

If you already have liver disease, you should completely avoid alcohol but if this is not possible, then try at least to reduce alcohol consumption and limit it to moderate levels: up to one drink per day for women and two for men.

Avoid fatty and sugary foods for liver disease: milk shakes and sweet crepes on a wooden plateau.

Avoid high-fat and sugary foods

High-fat and sugary foods are harmful for the liver as they contribute to the accumulation of fat in liver cells, which leads to conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

For instance, high-fat foods can cause inflammation and increase liver fat, while too much sugar, especially fructose, can be converted into fat in the liver. Over time, all this can lead to insulin resistance and further liver damage leading to different liver diseases, including fibrosis, and cirrhosis.
