Watch to discover more about Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and the impact it can have on people living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, along with a brief look inside the immune system and its relationship with IBD.

As you will learn from the video, the immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, organs, and the substances they make, that all work together to protect the body from foreign substances. Small proteins called cytokines, such as IL-12 and IL-23, can be compared to specialist police officers during a bank robbery. Using their special skills, they help to resolve any issue before damage can be done. In IBD, the officers start to act randomly and are no longer able to control the situation, struggling to correctly identify the guilty suspects and contributing to an autoimmune response.

This video is an introduction to IBD presented in an easy-to-understand way. It is not intended to provide scientific information about the complex mechanisms of the immune system.
