Researchers from the University of Colorado have identified a new class of antigens that may be a trigger for type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system attacks the body's own tissues. In type 1 diabetes, that attack centers on the beta cells in the pancreas. Beta cells produce insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. Without insulin, the blood sugar just keeps rising. Untreated type 1 diabetes is invariably fatal and there is no known cure.
