Folate is the natural form of a B vitamin; folic acid is the synthetic variant. Folate participates in "One Carbon Units" processes, in which folates aid in the transfer of one-carbon units in nucleic acid and amino acid metabolism. As a result, folates are essential for DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis. Folates are also linked to the metabolism of homocysteine, a biomarker for cardiovascular health.
