“A 35-year-old female had irregular bowel function since 2 yrs with the complaints of alternative constipation’s and diarrhea every time along with abdominal pain, disturbed sleeplessness and fatigue.

This is the common most sign with the people who are suffering from IBS. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, is a very common reason for visits to primary care physicians or gastro-intestinal specialist. IBS causes great distress to patients. It is an idiopathic, functional, gastrointestinal motility disorder.

IBS is known as GRAHANI in Ayurveda

Based on the bowel habits , Grahani/IBS is of 4 types:

1. Constipation predominant Grahani (Vataja)

2. Diarrhea predominant Grahani (Pittaja)

3. Dysentery predominant Grahani (Kaphaja)

4. Combination of all above symptoms (Tridoshaja)

The symptoms varies from patient to patient , it is characterized by:

- Irregular Bowel habits – altered bowel habits  (alternating diarrhea and constipation), Undigested food particles passing in motion, getting urge of motion immediately after any meal.

- Abdominal pain

Distension

- Bloating

- Nausea

- Sensation of incomplete evacuation.

 There also may be symptoms of the upper gastrointestinal tract (GI) such as heartburn, chest pain and dysphagia.

These may also include somatic and psychological symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, headache, anxiety, depression, and even urologic dysfunction and gynecologic symptoms.

Basic causes of IBS / GRAHANI:

- Toxins accumulating in tissue blocking the circulation.

- Poor nutrition, like consumption of heavy food, overeating, consumption of improper food, consumption of too many fluids or foods that are too cold.

- Poor digestion as a result the intake of improper food at improper times, or skipping meals or having food without feeling hungry.

- Imbalance of the nervous system , abnormal gut motor and sensory activity etc.

- Accumulation of physical and mental stress

- Diminished natural resistance and immunity

- Disruption of natural biological rhythm
