Gary suffers from chronic pain. 

In fact, he’s spent most of his life trying to cope with it through medication. 

It took 25 years for him to remember what caused that pain. 

It was an event that took place when he was 12 years old. Him and his brother went to go play by the creek one day. 

His brother was fishing. 

He was pounding rocks with a hammer a little ways away from him. Accidentally, he hit his head with the hammer when he swung back too hard. 

Slightly shocked from the event, he went to find his brother for help. 

Unfortunately - his brother didn’t hear him come up behind him. And his brother flung his fishing rod back to cast it. 

The fish hook caught Gary right in the back of the neck. 

His brother tried to pull it out but it wouldn't budge. So his brother cut the fishing line and Gary ran home. 

The details about how the nurse got to the house was a bit fuzzy to Gary, but the nurse that Gary met at his home tried to help. 

She had to push the fishhook to cut the barbed out, this ended up damaging one of the nerves in his neck. 

He found this out through exploratory surgery years and years later. During that surgery the doctors did the best they could to provide Gary some relief. Their efforts lasted for about 6 months. 

But after that - the pain returned.
