Dr. Fung explains that the cause of obesity is an issue of too much insulin. Intermittent fasting results in a significant drop in insulin levels. Take away insulin, and people lose weight. Conversely, give people insulin or insulin-raising drugs, and they gain weight. To a lesser extent, the same thing happens with cortisol.

However, most people still focus on calories in, calories out as the formula for weight loss.  The problem is, this fails most of the time! Common sense also says that not all foods are equally fattening. Eating the same number of calories from kale as from cookies is very different. Every time you eat, insulin goes up. This is natural. But eating many times per day tells your body to store the food energy you’re eating as fat, because of the constantly raised insulin.

If you want to lose weight, do two things: stop eating high-insulin-provoking foods, and fast intermittently to give your body a break from constant insulin. High insulin and high blood sugar are very toxic to the body, so giving someone with type 2 diabetes insulin is counter-productive. You’re simply trading one toxicity for another.

Losing weight can help reverse type 2 diabetes. And type 2 diabetes is really a disease of too much sugar in the body. Taking insulin can lower blood glucose, but it simply forces the sugar out of the blood and into your body, causing your organs to rot away over the span of ten or fifteen years. This is why diabetes is a disease of everything!

Diabetes and obesity are both diseases of too much insulin. The solution is obvious: lower insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a reversible disease. Intermittent fasting also increases your energy, and it may be beneficial for treating Alzheimer’s.
