Today I’ll be discussing about a very important problem which affects a lot of people which is dandruff. Dandruff in medical terms is called as seborrhoeic dermatitis and most commonly it occurs in the scalp, that is near the roots of the hair, but it can also affect in the face. It can occur near the nose, near the forehead, near the eyelid, around the mouth. For some people it can occur on the chest. For some people on the upper back and for some people even in the groin area or the private areas. So how do you manage this troublesome condition. Those of you who are suffering from dandruff might have noticed that it increases in the winter time. The dandruff definitely increases in the winter and the rainy season, generally in the cold weather and it reduces in summer when there is sunlight. It has been found that dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis is associated with a fungus. This fungus is called as valasacea and it is normally found in human skin but those who have dandruff react to this fungus causing a reaction. So how do you manage it? It can be managed by simple home remedies in very mild cases like lemon juice and frequent washing of the hair with regular shampoos. For those who have a very severe dandruff and flakes are falling all the time, they can use shampoos with ZPTO or zinc pyrithione which you might have seen in the advertisements. So ZPTO is a mild anti dandruff agent. If the dandruff is not controlled by ZPTO containing shampoos which you get in all stores, then you might visit a doctor. So a doctor, a dermatologist would prescribe you certain shampoos containing medicines like ketaconazole, suphur and coal tar, which reduces the malassezia or the fungus which is there and reduces the dandruff. In severe cases where you are using the shampoos and you ‘ve got resistant to the shampoos, even the shampoo is not working then we give certain anti fungal tablets for few days and it comes under control. There are many medicines available for dandruff and if you are resistant to medicines that your dermatologist already gave you, there is always a new medicine, you don’t have to worry about this condition and think this is a never ending problem. It can be easily be managed.
