We know that people of certain blood types are at higher risk for some diseases, but secretor status plays a factor as well. People who do not secrete blood type antigens (about 20% of the population) are at a greater risk of developing diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes.
They are also more likely to develop complications when they do suffer from diabetes. Non-diabetics with glucose intolerance are also significantly more likely to be non-secretors.
Many blood type O and blood type B non-secretors have insulin resistance syndrome, which can cause impairment of triglyceride conversion, resulting in a lowered metabilic rate. Low metabolism also promotes the storage of intracellular water.
