When it comes to bipolar disorder, I’ve heard it all. People say things without thinking about the impact it has on those of us living with bipolar disorder. That’s why I’ve come up with this video on 5 things you should NOT say to someone with bipolar disorder - based off my experience living with bipolar 2. If you have someone (or lots of someones) who need to hear this, I hope you’ll share the video and pass it onto them.
Stigma is one of the problems that prevent those of us living with bipolar disorder from living an authentic and good life. Statements that disregard the legitimacy of our mental illness cause those of us living with bipolar disorder to question ourselves. It makes us feel like we need to be fixed or cured. In addition, passively speaking of bipolar disorder with a negative tone is always damaging because it heightens our anxiety about openly discussing our diagnosis or coming forward with it.
People believe what they see in the media. Usually, there’s an extremely negative portrayal of people with bipolar disorder. In some people’s minds, the hurtful comments they make are justified. We face many challenges living with bipolar disorder, and when those around us make these types of statements, it causes us to self-stigmatize.
What do people say to you that affects your life with bipolar disorder? And how do you deal with those comments? Please share your comments below or do a response video and send it into info@healthyplace.com. See you next week! Hannah
