Chronic Fatigue Dos and Don'ts: Tips and Prevention

What you should Do for Fatigue / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Cup of cafe latte and next to it some coffee beans in a bag.

Drink coffee

Coffee can boost your energy because it contains a stimulant called caffeine. Thus, when you drink coffee, the caffeine is absorbed into the bloodstream and travels to the brain where it blocks the inhibitory neurotransmitter adenosine.

This increases the amount of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain, leading to enhanced firing of neurons and more transmitted energy in the body.

However, it is best to drink caffeine in the morning and avoid it in the late afternoon and evening, otherwise it will disturb your sleep, which will make you become tired.

It is also important to drink coffee moderately and avoid excessive consumption because this would also cause sleep disruption.

Stay hydrated

Make sure you drink enough water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Dehydration can increase fatigue because it reduces the blood volume in the body which makes the heart work harder to pump blood. It also reduces the blood flow to the brain, which makes the person feel more tired.

In addition, dehydration creates an electrolyte imbalance in the body. As a result, you will lose electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and chloride, through sweat and urine. This leads to more fatigue because these electrolytes play an important role in maintaining fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contractions.

What you should Avoid for Fatigue / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Glasses of alcohol containing rum and slices of lemon with some peppermint on top.

Avoid alcohol

Avoid drinking alcohol because it can interfere with sleep quality and disrupt the circadian rhythms by increasing the frequency of awakening at night, which leads to fatigue.

Alcohol consumption, particularly close to bedtime, can also interfere with the natural release of melatonin, which is a hormone that helps regulate sleep-wake cycles.
