Debatable topics
Many health experts warn against drinking cold water because it affects digestion and reduces the body’s ability to break down fat. It also constricts the blood vessels and decreases heart rate.
Experts advise people to drink warm water to improve digestion, detoxify the body, and help with weight loss. They maintain that hot water is better for weight loss because it helps break down fat molecules in the body.
However, other experts believe that cold water promotes weight loss. They point out that drinking cold water cools the body down, lowering its temperature.
As a result, the body needs to use more energy to burn a few extra calories and bring its temperature back to normal.
In contrast, hot water is closer to room temperature. The body doesn’t need to burn calories to adjust its overall temperature.
Meanwhile, other doctors point out that the temperature of the water does not matter. Drinking water, regardless of whether it is hot or cold, will help with weight loss because water suppresses appetite and boosts metabolism.
Some health experts believe that drinking cold water can lead to effective weight loss. According to Dr. Alan Mandel, a chiropractor, if people drink two liters of cold water, they can burn about 50-75 calories.
When exposed to cold water, the body has to work harder and burn more energy to heat the cold water to 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit).
The body needs to do that to regulate its temperature and maintain homeostasis, a stable internal environment. As a result, drinking cold water helps the body burn calories.
A few studies show that drinking cold water can burn fat and help people lose weight. One 2011 study conducted in the International Journal of Obesity examined the correlation between drinking cold water and weight loss in obese children.
It found that drinking cold water increased the children’s energy expenditure by 25% for an hour.
The results indicated that drinking cold water may help overweight children lose weight. If the children drank their recommended daily amounts of water, they could lose about 1 kilogram per year.
Some experts argue that drinking cold water does not help people lose weight. They believe that hot water is a better option for weight loss.
Manisha Chopra, a nutritionist and fitness expert in India, explains, “When we drink warm water, our body switches its temperature and activates the metabolism.”
She also says, “Warm water breaks down body fat into molecules, making it easy for the digestive system to burn.”
In contrast, cold water makes fat more compact in the body, so drinking cold water makes it harder for people to burn fat.
Plus, other experts argue that drinking cold water is not an effective weight loss solution because it does not cause the body to burn many calories.
Dr. Rachele Pojednic Ph.D., assistant professor in the nutrition department at Simmons College, points out that drinking cold water burns very few calories. She tells SELF, an American online beauty magazine, that drinking one glass of cold water “burns about 4-7 calories,” which is “equivalent to burning one plain M&M.”
Lauren Harris-Pincus, M.S., R.D.N., dietician, spokesperson, and author, also says that drinking cold water does not “make a significant change in anybody’s weight.”
Scientific research also shows that drinking cold water does not lead to significant weight loss. One 2006 study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that drinking cold water increased energy expenditure by 15 kilojoules or 3.5 calories after 90 minutes.
According to the Johns Hopkins University website, the Hub, the water’s temperature doesn’t matter. Drinking water in itself is essential for weight loss because water suppresses appetite and boosts metabolism.
Besides drinking water, most nutritionists recommend exercising or eating healthier foods for more successful weight loss.
