Osteoporosis
What is Osteoporosis:
Bones are very important organs that make up the human skeletal system, and their structure changes throughout a person’s lifetime.
A person’s bone structure is always changing due to a process called bone remodeling. Bone remodeling consists of two processes: bone formation and bone resorption.
Bone cells called osteoblasts help form new bone during bone formation. During bone resorption, mature bone tissue is worn down by osteoclasts, or cells that break down bone.
Bone resorption mainly occurs if bone tissue is old or damaged. If bone tissue is inflamed, osteoclast activity increases, and they break down bone more rapidly.
Osteoporosis is a disease that occurs when the bones become fragile and porous. It reduces bone density, strength, and quality, hence increasing the risk of fractures.
People with osteoporosis undergo more bone resorption than bone formation, causing the bones to become weaker.
The disease occurs progressively with age. A person may not be aware that he or she has osteoporosis because an individual may not experience any symptoms until a fracture occurs.
