Eczema

What is Eczema

Eczema refers to a group of skin disorders that result in dry, red, and itchy skin. The most common type of eczema is atopic dermatitis where the skin is damaged and becomes inflamed, making it red and itchy.

Other types of eczema include: contact dermatitis, neurodermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, nummular eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and stasis dermatitis.

At the moment, eczema has no cure. Dermatologists use conventional drugs like corticosteroids to manage the disease, treat its symptoms, and prevent new outbreaks and flare-ups.

According to the National Eczema Association, 31.6 million people in the United States have some form of eczema.

Eczema Causes

The exact causes of eczema are unknown. However, several risk factors are believed to cause eczema, including genetic. People who have eczema might have inherited a set of genes that make them more predisposed to the condition because their skin is weak and cannot protect itself from bacteria, irritants, and allergens that might affect it. People who have a family history of allergies may be more susceptible to develop eczema. It usually appears in childhood.

It might also be the result of immune system dysfunction where the immune system produces an exaggerated immune response to different substances on the skin or allergens inside the body. The immune response causes the skin to become inflamed, red, and itchy.

Eczema Symptoms

Symptoms of eczema include dry and itchy skin, red to brown patches on the skin, small bumps on the skin, or thick cracked skin. A person’s skin might also become sensitive and swollen skin because of excessive scratching.
